There is a small risk if both seals are bad. Which is why you want to use atf+4 in both. Remove the fill plug from the TC and see if it's getting overfilled. If the fluid is going into the TC , not that big of deal, but you don't want the RP getting into the trans.

no. none. zero. nada. no way jose. both units are sealed and there is a drain gap between the 2.

if you are removing them, there is no need to drain either. t-case only holds about 1 quart of ATF+4 by the way which is red..... auto trans holds about 12 quarts but its so damn heavy you need a jack or a friend named paul bunyon, so draining it has no effect other than making a huge mess where you are trying to work.

just because your leak is red, don't assume it the trans. both use ATF+4.

Funny, I've got the same issue (98 Ram) and today I planned to search the topic here. Not losing much fluid, but I'm not sure which seal is bad. I might just change both while I'm there. I guess I could put in some UV dye but there's not much point.

Seals aren't terribly expensive..... if you are going to be RIGHT there, replacing both is the best plan.

forgot to respond - I changed the seals and also did the tail seal - all is right with the world again.
