I'm assuming it's the rear seal on my transmission, or is it the transfer case? And do they share the same fluid? Not very knowledgable on 4x4 systems yet.
the fluid is red, so its ATF, but you're correct that both the AT and TC use ATF. so its either the rear seal of the AT or the front seal of the TC. the TC only holds about 1 quart of fluid, so check and see if its low. you're leaking a lot. don't let the TC get low and run out or it'll burn it up in a hurry.
if nothing is obvious, you could put some ultraviolet oil dye in the TC.
Well, I'm pretty sure it's the trans then because I just added a quart to it since it was low and it started leaking worse as soon as it was full again.
if you haven't done so, download the service manual for the 01. it has good diagrams of the transmission.
this is a question - if you drop the tcase, does the transmission have an easy to get to rear seal? or do you have to take the damn transmission apart?
Apparently, the seal can be changed without yanking the trans. Drop the t-case, and there it is..... manual suggests slide hammer with a screw... (screw it into the old seal, and give it a couple whacks.) New seal is just driven in.
