swapping transmission issue; 95 Ram 1500 V8 2wd
Hey everybody. I just found this forum and it looked like I could get some help here. Here's my situation.
Last year I bought a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 V8 2wd from a guy on Craigslist. The past few months, it has been slipping badly. So I decided to replace the transmission myself. I went to a junkyard, they said they had a replacement for this model (used, not rebuilt), and I bought it. My dad and I worked this entire weekend to take out the old one. It was a pain. But we eventually got it out.
The problem is, the old transmission from the truck (the "old transmission"), is not the exact same as the one I purchased from the junkyard (I'll call this the "junkyard transmission"). They are very, very similar, but not the exact same. And because it took so much freaking work to get the old transmission out of the truck -- literally, it took all weekend -- I don't want to install the junkyard transmission and find out it just isn't the right one.
The other problem is that I do not know what kind of transmission the old transmission actually is. I have no idea how many people owned this truck and what they did to it. All I know is I want to replace it. Can anyone help identify both of these transmissions? Also, in order to get a proper replacement of the old transmission, what exact type is this thing? I thought it was 46RH because this website [http://www.atra.com/articles/automot...mission_i_have] told me so. But I really don't know anymore. I wrote down all the numbers appearing on both transmissions and I can supply them if it will help.
Here are pics:

Just by looking at that 8 pin connector, me thinks your junkyard transmission is a 46RE.
Or maybe a 42RE??? It looks considerably smaller than yours but I'm not sure how much the physical sizes differs from the 46RE/RH.
Do you know if the junkyard truck was a V6 or V8?

Thanks for all the help.
To answer your questions:
Yes, the junkyard transmission is smaller than the old transmission. We measured the inside of the bell housing from several angles to confirm this. Both units altogether are roughly the same size, except for the precise measurements and electrical connectors indicated above. The junkyard transmission is definitely slightly smaller.
No, I do not know if the junkyard transmission is for a V6 or V8. My guess, based on the slightly smaller size, is that it's for a V6. The circular plate that surrounds the shaft on the inside of the bell housing is definitely smaller on the junkyard transmission than the old transmission. But I don't know if it's for a V6 for sure. I specifically asked the junkyard salesman for a 46RH transmission (I specifically used the phrases: "1995 Dodge Ram 1500" and "V8" and "2wd"). Yet that is what he pulled for me.
Yes, the junkyard transmission does look newer. I was able to spot a white barcode sticker on the side of it, and it has the date "4/23/01." This is obviously a newer model than the model that I need.
Yes, I was wearing flip-flops. It was the day after taking out the old transmission! And extremely hot outside (I'm in north Texas).
It seems you guys all agree the transmissions are different. But I have one more question: what if I don't find a transmission that looks EXACTLY the same as the old transmission? What numbers/codes do I use from the old transmission to confirm that any replacement I might find will be suitable? (Again, I can supply all the numbers/codes that I found on the old transmission, if that will help. Although the junkyard transmission does have the white barcode sticker, the old transmission's barcode sticker is torn and burnt so I could not read those numbers.)

I found this site [ https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ission-id.html ] for identifying the transmission serial number. Luckily I took a picture of that exact spot on the old transmission. (I am out of town right now, and am not near the truck and transmissions to just step outside and take a look in person). Here's the pic of the side of the pan on the old transmission:
As best I can tell, from zooming in on this picture, the serial number reads as follows:
PK5211832221272144
Now I would like to figure out what this means. That way, I can determine if the old transmission is the original transmission from this truck when it was new.

Honestly you just need to find a more competent junkyard man! And get another 46RH.
A 46RH will look the same as yours. A V6 Ram has the 42RH/RE which explains the smaller size of the junkyard transmission.
Just need to find a '94 or '95 (I think '96 went to 46RE) and you should be golden.
All the 2nd Gen Rams basically look the same, except for some Sport Model differences, so it's easy to have no idea for sure what year it is and say "Sure it's a '95"
