Default transmission issues. new to automatics.

so i just bought 1995 ram 1500 2wd 5.9 standard cab 150000. first thing i notice is it shakes at high speeds. so i attempt the ball joints tie rods and all else. and all i can tell people is not to use master pro products and i believe you need a more refined tool than there b.j. press which i had to modify. 4 days 2 wrong parts later and i went to auto zone now the truck drives smooth as far as front chassis is concerned. anyways my tranny when reversing up hills wont do it with out major slipping and hesitation, my 1-2 shift is at 2000 2-3 is at 4-5000 and only for 2 seconds until 4th and 0d kicks in when it feels like it there seems to be no pattern. and for all these shifts you have to let off the gas for it to shift.also i noticed some kind of business card stuffed in the top of tranny pulled it out and it started leaking. i get a whirling noise when driving.i also get a weird click/knock metal sound from back of truck and its not the bedliner since i removed it spare tire is not installed so i will try that.and oil cooler lines leaking. i am going to attempt to adjust bands the t.v cable replace fluid not flush and filter along with differential fluid any advice or tips would be extremely appreciaated since i am just going in blindly and never played with dodge or auto trannys before. is tranny computer controlled? anything to replace while down there or inspect. thank you guys and have a great day.

here is another question if my truck is automatic and has 5 speeds does that mean the previous owner had swapped transmissions . everything i am finding online says these only came w/ 4 speed autos and 5 speed is only manual.

You have the 46RH trans. It is a 4 speed, with locking torque converter. (thus, it may feel like a five speed.) No five speed autos that will bolt to the engine without obvious modifications.

Use ONLY ATF +4. You can get it fairly cheap at Wal-Mart.....

Your trans has a mechanical governor. Might be a bit sticky, or, you may just be low on fluid. Fluid/filter change, and band adjustment may help, but, I would start saving your pennies for a rebuild anyway.

Where ya at? I seem to have a spare 46RH sitting in my garage..... its a rebuildable core, not a working trans though... could rebuild it while still driving the truck, then just swap it in when you are ready.

well first thank you for response that torque converter thing makes more sense since my pan gasket was same as 46rh. is the plastic gasket reusable .
is there any certain procedure to clean a governor or just remove and take some brake cleaner to it. also any knowledge on properly adjusting t.v cable is it at idle or w.o.t. or koeo. i am in northern ca. sacramento area i occasionally am in bay area, redding, reno for work. what would a rebuild entail any special transmission tools and how long do you think it would take someone who has little transmission knowledge and work experience ive done motors and everything else but i try to steer clear of trannys from everything i have heard about em. and any chance you know about swapping a manual in just out of curiosity. i will do my own research on all my questions but always like hearing about different methods /procedures and especially from someone who actually knows what they are talking about. i changed fluid/ filter and adjusted cable from what i read up no difference other than 1-2 seems to be more inconsistent didnt do bands because my torque wrench only went to 120 and my research said i need 72in/lb. got new wrench will adjust bands soon unless theres a good reason not to other than the fact that im running out of stain free shirts. thank you for your help.

There are a couple auto to manual trans threads here. A few members have done it. Easiest way is to have a donor truck.... that way you are sure to have everything you are going to need. (aside from the inevitable broken fasteners....)

The plastic/rubber/neoprene/viton/whateveritis gasket is indeed re-usable. If it isn't obviously screwed up somewhere.

Download the 95 service manual from the FAQ section here. (the service manual thread, I believe it is a sticky as well) TV cable adjustment is done with engine and key off, trans in park. Fairly easy, but, easier yet with two people.

Governor? I don't know....... tranny's aren't really my bag. Dig thru the service manual, have a look at the section that deals with it, see what you can determine. Might be easy, then again, it might require dismembering the whole trans.....

A couple members here have rebuilt their own transmissions, most of them had never been inside a trans before. (at least, not quite that deep....) I think gdstock has his thread around here somewhere. There is also the Trans thread by j415 in the FAQ section that has some links to some good info. Browse around, read up, and see if it is something you want to tackle. Only really tricky part is the 800lb spring in the O/D section.... need a press to remove/install that.

Look in the bottom of your t-shirt drawer. Wear some of the pre-stained ones..... it is simply impossible to work on a trans, without taking a bath in red fluid. (be it trans fluid, or your own blood......)

Go ahead and do the band adjustment. Just be VERY careful on the procedure, and make REAL sure you do it the right way. Way too easy to screw that one up. (for such a seemingly simply adjustment.....)

So much for selling you a rebuildable core. Shipping would cost more than a new trans.

And, by the way... Welcome to DF!

haha. thank you for the info i was looking forward to rebuilding one to add to my list but now i think im going to shift gears and head towards a manual swap. unless bands are my issue then i can put it on back burner. i am definitely going to look into adding a drain plug for any future service that may arise. its got to be cheaper than shirts and worth not having soaked gloves. i just hope dodge forums are better than f150 forums they seem to have all junked their trucks by now. once again thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Oh trust me, there are plenty of us who still have our 2nd gens. For better or worse you gotta love em, even though the pump gives it to me hard each fill-up lol

well paul dehayes im hoping you are right it seems like i am going to be needing some assistance in my near future after fluid change t.v cable adj. and band adj. iwent to drive it reverse good first gear good second gear nonexistent same with 3 and 4 parked it immediately. at least i can rely on park. i noticed that the transmission continually leaked oil entire time and it drained out about 1.5 antifreeze size bottles full of fluid plus whatever was on my clothes and garage floor a lot more than the 4 quarts autozone said i would need . also this guy switched out computer before i got this truck is there a way to verify its the right computer in there.how many computers are in 95 i only located 1 and how many connectors are on 46rh compared to 46re i am suspecting foul play on prev. owners side after finding lots of interesting custom wiring and finding broken glass under carpet accompanied with new headlight/tail lights bumpers and recent poor paint job broken dash lots of little things i am just noticing pink plastic tags on chassis and they look new two different heads one from 06 and one reman in 2012 in canada.im going to run new casting numbers and see what i can come up with also any suggestions to what problem may be or just rebuild and hope the motor isnt on death row too. any suggestions are helpful suggestions. thank you guys for input and helping the new guy out.
