On the Dana yes shimming will be need for both the pinion and the carrier, for the 9.25 shimming for the pinion only there are adjusters to set the carrier. Best is to Dl the FSM in the DIY area and read it through or head over to the Dana site and DL the service manuals there. Having a set of set-up pinion bearings for both diff's makes life ezer. As Dodge Dude posted there is no upgrade kit for the clutch packs, best is to toss the trak-lok and get some other flavor of lsd. 3.92 and 4.10 match your tire size right.

on the 1500's, the 3.92 was a factory option, but is only found in about 10% or less (guessing at pct).

still in 1500, the 4.10's were only included in the 00-01 off-road edition, which is only 5% or less of those years (guessing at pct)

if you use aftermarket gears, the rear is a standard install, but the front dana 44 has a carrier break at 3.92 and above, meaning that 3.92 and above need EITHER a new carrier or "thick cut" gears. so with thick cut gears you can avoid the extra cost of the carrier, which is $75-100 unless you find one cheap.

plan on spending plenty of money. the labor is very expensive.

What size tires do you want to run? <- This is IMPORTANT.

I'm in the same boat as you. I really want to regear to put 35x12.50s on when I get my 5" suspension lift next month.

I don't know if I want to go to 4.10s or 4.56s. I drive about 50% highway and 50% city.

Plus I'm new to gearing too. Not to highjack the thread but do they make a kit for our half ton trucks that have all the parts necessary to regear? I don't know where to start on the buying-all-the-parts thing.

Randy's Ring and Pinion. Ebay used to have complete front and rear kits for under 600, with good quality bearings and such as well.

I went to Randy's Ring and Pinion but I'm new to the whole gearing scenario. What all parts would I need to go 4.56s?

I'll take a look on ebay here in a bit.
