Default How to replace O2 sensor on Ram 1500

I am new to posting, but have been following the forum for a little while now. I have a 1995 Ram 1500 5.9 L V8 4x2 with 130K on rebuilt. I am getting 4 codes on the O2 sensors, but now for some reason the guy at O'reilly can't get the OBD1 to read anymore (vehicle not responding).... So I think I should just replace the O2 sensors, but I can't find any DIY info. Can anyone give me some pointers on how (or whether) to complete this? Is there only one?

Welcome to DF! Pretty easy, unscrew the old one, screw the new one in. There are special sockets that make it a little easier if its rusted in bad, you can get them at any auto parts store. Might hit it with some pb blaster or other penetrating oil and let it soak for a few hours. Not sure if there is only one or two sensors. Someone else will know I'm sure.

Not sure on location on yours, but my '01 has the plug for the o2 on top of the trans. That was the hardest part on mine, trying to reach it and get it undone. There is a lock tab that has to be pulled sideways, then push/squeeze the "button" and pull it apart.

As stated, there is a "special" socket for them:

I just used a regular wrench. You can also use a pipe wrench if there is room to get it in there.

Some are real stubborn to get out. A 7/8" 6 point combination wrench is best for those. Undo the plug first, cut it off, slide the wire through wrench and give it go. If it does not want to budge, start the motor and get the exhaust warmed up, and give it another go. Disconnect negative battery cable before cutting wires and installing new sensor.

Talking Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. I put a Bosch on this morning and the old one came out no problem. I ended up using a crescent wrench and it worked fine. There are four prongs on the plug and one had some pretty bad corrosion, so I cleaned it out the best I could. We'll see how it goes. Check engine light went off, so that is always encouraging.

Bad choice installing a Bosch o2. I'm sorry for not stating to get an NTK o2.

I ran a Bosch for over 5 years til it acted up, but maybe their quality went down. I replaced both last fall with NTK though once I learned what OEM was.

....so...Bosch won't work? Is NTK just a preferred part? I guess I could switch it out if you think it's a good idea.

VERY good idea. These trucks just seem to hate the Bosch's for some reason. NTK is OEM so may as well. Cheap on rockauto.com
