Default NEW GUY 2nd gen 46re variation problem

Hey guys I frequently visited this site several times over to get help fixing my truck. Its a 96 ram 1500 5.2/318 2wd ext cab reg bed. Bought the truck for 800 and had a motor put in it, oil pump, all new gaskets (ALL OF THEM), replaced the o2 after the cat, gov pres solenoid, all new throttle body sensors, pcv valve and filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil pack, fuel pump...pretty much everything myself.

Now I recently put 33's on the truck, up from the stock 29's and on the way home the trans lost OD then all gears in D. Manual shifted it home, and it ran fine in D on my road except no OD. Dropped the pan(again) to change the gov press sensor this time but I put the truck in R and I heard grinding. I know the torque converter wasn't locking up before this incident as well. After the grinding I read the forums and concluded its mechanical failure. So I found a 46re on a 98 ram van with a 5.2. Pulled it and realized my 46re has the speed sensor near the front of the tail shaft, and another that has a plastic gear on the end.

Obviously I need that to have an operating speedometer. But is it just the 96 model 46re that has this feature? I'm so stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You need the trans out of a 96 or 97 model year. Before or after won't work.

Welcome to DF!

does that just consist of a 96/97 half ton ram pick up? or is it in a ram van, jeep, dakota, or durango?

Stick to a Ram for the easiest swap...

+1.. A tranny out of a 2500 with a 5.9 will also work as long as you stick to those 2 years, and it's also a 2wd. Btw, you should install a new torque converter no matter what.

Wouldn't the 2500 trans be a 47re? I'm pretty sure those have a larger bell housing. Not 100% though. And when I bought the motor from my friend there was a torque converter that came with it. Its painted blue so I'm guessing its already been rebuilt?

Nope. 47RE is the V10 and Diesel Auto....

That's what's great about the "superior" 2500, same dorky 360 and 46RE that's in the 1500....
