Default Whoops, my bad.

Hello, I changed out my cap and leads tonight and inadvertently crossed #5 and #7, ( aft R/H corner). Noticed the miss and found the mistake. I now have a check engine light on my cluster.

Does anyone know how to clear that light on a 98 1500 SLT, 5.2 litre? Any help is appreciated.

I don't know if it will work on the 98, but there are two procedures for the newer trucks: the key dance trick and just disconnecting the battery for five minutes.

The key-dance trick involves turning the key on (no engine start) and off 3 times, leaving the key on for the 3rd time. Dunno if it will work or not, 98 was a weird year.

The other is to just disconnect the negative battery cable, turn the headlights on, wait 5-10 minutes, turn the headlights off, and re-connect the cable.

Thank you Mr. Dodgedude. Disconnected battery, tidied shop, reconnected and no check engine light! If only everything mechanical was that simple.

Pulling the PCM plugs work well for me, quicker than resetting the damn radio settings.

The key trick will not work on a 98. Besides, even if it did, you can't reset the pcm that way , the key trick is only for reading any codes that might be stored. Disconnecting the battery as stated or a scanner is the only way to reset the pcm.

This is a very bad procedure, one small short or spike will destroy the PCM. Please do not suggest this to people.

Disconnecting the negative battery cable (before) replacing or fixing anything electrical, is the best way for the pcm to reset and learn the new settings of said fix or replacement.
