Default Ever seen this power booster failure

i been turnin wrenches since i was 10-12(now 68)and have never seen this happen.
cost me $166.00 ticket for careless driving. and i kept telling the policeman writing the tickey it was a "mechanical failure."
i was moving in trafic at the max, 20 MPH. i saw the taillights in front of me, had plenty of room to stop, stepped on the brake peddle, and pushed....and heard this POP!!! under the hood. peddle got hard, i wasnt slowing down, i pushed peddle to the floor and BAM... hit the car in front of me. was at such a slow speed the air bags didnt go off. bent up the front bumper and look at the master cyl/booster picture!!!!094Ss.jpg?t=1382204847

Wow. Take the pic with you, and fight the ticket. That is one unusual failure. Haven't been doing this quite as long as you, but, I have never seen that either. Bizarre.

Your brake booster most likely rusted out from the inside out. And that is what caused it to break the way it did. I have seen it happen a few times when I was working as a mechanic for a dealership. That sucks to have that happen and even more that you had an accident because of it. I for the life of me can't remember what causes the booster to rust.

Good luck.

truck is a 1999 with 99k on it. i live in pensacola fl and this truck is RUST FREE as the day i bought it 6 years ago. it has never been "at the beach" with the salt water/air. iam 20 miles from there. as you can see the booster still has the parts tag on it from the factory. got the bolt that was in there........looks like it a flat headed bolt, that is spot welded in there when they build the can. i really think i should fight the CARELESS DRIVING TICKET because it was a MECHANICAL FAILURE.
as for me having a heavy foot, this thing POPPED, before i hit the car in front of me. i stepped on the pedal, applied a fair amount of foot pressure(was only going 20-25 MPH at the max!!!!! how much pressure do you use to stop a truck at that speed. NOW ....WHEN I HEARD THE POP!!!! it didnt slow down..THEN I STOOD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL!!!! and like i said AIR BAGS DIDNT GO OFF it was such a minimal impact. i got the new NAPA REBUILT on there sat. and have been driving the truck since. didnt hurt the master cyl. heres a couple pics of the truck.

nothing yet. got another bumper from a U-PULL-IT for $40. returned the booster for $60 core charge. i took a pic of the booster/m cyl to the u-pull-it guy, he suggested i take that pic to the state police office here in town....and see if they can adjust the ticket to something less then careless driving.
