Default pulled 46RH-- cant get TQcon OFF??

we got my sons trans pulled today. and for some stupid reason, we cant get the TQ converter to slide off the input shaft( bellhousing end of the transmission) is there a lock or something on there? I tried turning it just incase the splines are not lined up, wiggled it up down, sideways etc. it just wont come off.... any ideas???

the trans oil was burnt, filter was BAD!! no metal flakes in the filter or oil pan, the magnet had a bout 1/4" of crud on it. looked to be a LOT of clutch material in the oil. so here we are... pulled it.

any ideas on getting the TQ converter off???

thanks for the help/ ideas :O) much appreciated.

BTW 1995 5.9L 2WD auto- 46RH trans 188K miles.

The torque converter just slides onto the input shaft - there is nothing special that holds it in place. I would put a pry bar in between the back of the converter and the front pump to wedge it loose. Like you mentioned, sounds like the transmission was seriously overheated. Since the transmission is going to be rebuilt, I wouldn't hesitate to use a pry bar on the converter, since that converter will likely need to be replaced or rebuilt.

ended up dropping the large end of the case about 24" down onto wood blocks to get the converter off- its was basically welded to the oil pump shaft. the oil pump bushing, gears, etc are junk, the center pump gear was broken in 2 pieces. the seal was gone!!! but its out now---

ordered a master rebuild kit, TQ conv, oil pump, and ATSG manul to get it rebuilt. is cheaper and better than dropping in a junkyard trans back in to it...

Keep track of your costs please, and let us know what you do, and how much you spend. I have a 46RE core in my barn just waiting to get rebuild.

HeyYou, just FYI, he has a 46RH, which should be a bit less expensive than rebuilding a 46RE, which has more electronic controls. I had a core 46RH rebuilt by a local rebuilder here and it cost me about $1600 - this included a full rebuild kit, remanufactured converter, TransGo shift kit and ultra-deep TCI cast aluminum pan, parts and labor. Luckily, all of my transmission hard parts were in good shape and reusable.

Spend at least 200 bucks on a converter. The 80 dollar fellers aren't worth it.
