Timing set
Gonna replace my timing set while I have the motor pulled, among a few other things. My dad seems to think we need to pull the harmonic balancer to get the timing cover off. Is this true? Just need to know if I need to track down a puller before we start the project.

The HB must come off to change the t chain. Depending on the type of HB you have it could be a possibility of two pullers, one that uses three bolts to pull and then just a two jaw puller. I am sure you know this but I will post it anyway don't pull from the outside of the HB you will destroy it.

I didn't know that. I have never actually messed with a Hb before. Pops said he has a kind of "do all" puller that he uses at work. Hopefully we can get that to work, if not might be able to rent one.

You got it. Somewhere here on DF there are pix of the two types of HB's. I know the search function kinda works here you might try a search for HB removal. Then there is the good old FSM it should tell you what you need for a tool.

Are you doing this here in Ellensburg or somewhere else? I have pullers too if you need something. I still have my new engine on the stand so you could see what it looks like.

just remove the fan and shroud, belt. ps accessory bracket?
use a 1-1/4 socket on the big crank bolt.
if you have an impact wrench, just zip it off.
if you don't, then you'll need to rig up method to prevent the engine from turning. a flat piece of steel bolted to the harmonic balancer works good.
if the water pump is old, replace it and the front crank seal. it will come in the timing cover gasket kit.

I'm actually in Cle Elum now, but no I don't have anywhere to do it so will be taking it north to my dad's shop. I will see what my dad has, I may hit you up for a puller since you offered.
