Default 4 x 4 Clunking Noise

Driving down the road there is no noises from the truck, I then engage in to 4 wheel drive, ONLY when taking out of 4 wheel drive there is a clunk/jerk noise.

It is a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500.

Any suggestions what this could be would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well we could use a little more info. What transmission? What engine? You say it clunks & jerks when taking it out of 4WD? Or are you saying that when you're in 4WD and taking off from a stop it jerks & clunks? What size tires? Any lift? Other mods to the truck?

there are no noises at all driving down the road. It engages into 4wd fine, again there are no noised. But once I disengage, it jerks and clunks for a split second and then is fine once in 2wd.

You on dry pavement while doing that? If you are, then, DON'T do that. Tires need to be able to slip a bit, on pavement they can't, so things break instead.

It sounds like it staying in 4WD for a second longer and then pops out and back into 2WD. But without a little more info it's hard to say.
As HeyYou said if you're doing this on a hard surface then that is a big part of the problem. So AGAIN shed some more light on the issue and maybe we'll be able to help.

You may have a broken snap ring on the output shaft that comes out of the transfer case. Its a was a common problem back in the day.
