Default Will T-case from 96 fit 98?

Tried searching for an answer but couldn't find it. Need to replace my transfer case. My parts truck is a 96 and I was wondering if it is interchangeable with a 98? Thanks

I don't think so because of the speedometer output and all that. Unless it will swap over.

Actually, it should work. On the older truck, speedo is driven off of VSS in the output section of the t-case, on the newer truck, it uses the sensor in the rear diff. So, the 96 case into the 98 truck will work. The other direction would require a bit more creativity to get the speedo to work.

Also, keep in mind, the shift pattern on the 96 is different as well.

I'm trying to work out a deal for a 1998 ram 4x4 for parts but yeah, so far the 96 is my best bet. Will it work without modding anything? I would have to mod the speedometer output wouldn't I?

I'd swap the shifter over from the donor truck as well.

Actually, the VSS in the older t-case simply won't be used. Nothing to plug in there, and the speedo will work just fine.

As hey you said, the shifting pattern is different. I mean you could always use your shifter, just put the **** from donor truck on so you're not driving in 4l by accident.

Ill take a look at it tonight. What happened was it snowed really heavy yesterday so I decided to take the girlfriend out and teach her how to use 4x4 in case she ever needed to borrow my truck if conditions are bad. Well after a while i took over and started playin. Went somewhere I shouldn't have. Snapped Dana 44 axle shaft at the U joint and transfer case is making some nasty noises. My buddy with a Rubicon had to winch me out. Now my girlfriend knows what not to do.

Ooops.

Those are lessons worth learning as well.
