Does the truck lurch forward a bit when that happens? If so, I would suspect the torque converter has permanently locked up......

You could try disconnecting the 8 pin connector on the drivers side of the trans, 'bout half way back, and see if that makes any difference. (in case it is simply an electrical problem.)

No it doesn't lurch, it just dies. I've tried running the RPMs up and dropping it in gear and its still like you turn the key off once you put it in gear

That's not a good sign.......

What about reverse? Can you back up? If not, I don't think you have an engine problem, I think you have a trans problem.

Dies soon as its put in reverse. I can see where your going with that, but didn't explain why it only starts once in a while

Do the v10s have crank sensors? Sounds like a typical crank sensor issue...
