Default Engine Pop & O2 sensor

hey guys i posted a long time ago been chasing down this problem for a long time now. i had a "engine pop" develop under loads such as going up hill and hard accel. so anyways after changing anything and everything it could be, i still get it. well today i chose to just unscrew the o2 sensor and drive it up a hill with it still connected but not in the exhaust, it ran like a dream, i did get one slight little pop once, but it was on flat surface which was weird. but while going up and down the giant hills nothin, ran perfect.

should i try it again with the o2 sensor completly unhooked? and say it runs perfect how should i go about fixing this? its the pre cat o2 there is no post o2. truck has no cat anyways. i could try puttin 2-3 non foulers on it to get it out of the stream i guess. any other ideas?

Does it only do it when warmed up? (or, after running for a few minutes?) If so, just replace the O2 sensor.

nope does it with the old and new o2 sensor plugged into the exhaust. the sensor itself is fine i do believe, since the brand new sensor made no difference when i put it on a long while back.

Put the sensor back in the exhaust, but, unplug the connector. Go for a drive. (it will set a code, eventually...) if the truck drives better, time for a different sensor.

ok so im back and here are the results.

-sensor in the pipe but unplugged, truck hated it. pop pop pop
-sensor completely off the truck totally, truck hated it. pop pop pop
-plugged back in but not put into the pipe, truck loves it, no pops.

so the sensor is reading something...but it dont like the gases inside the pipe. should i just go ahead and still try a new NTK? and if that does the same thing only think i can think of is to step it off the pipe with some non-foulers and get it out of the direct stream.

Check your fuel pressure. With the sensor unplugged, you should run a tad rich, shouldn't be popping.

i checked the pressure a long time ago, and i thought that it was good at the time i dont remember what it read. a couple weeks ago when it snowed and iced, i started the truck, drove down the street and came to a stop and it died. it wouldnt start again until i kicked on the bottom of the tank. been good ever since that. who knows maybe the pressure is going crazy or droppin under load. never checked it under load only in park. i have had the pump out of the tank and it all looked clean as a whistle so i never thought anything about it. that dont mean its right though.

Hhhmmmm.... that would make me mighty suspicious.

Pump needs to be able to do two things. Supply the correct pressure, and the correct VOLUME. If either one is off, you get driveablility problems. Really need to put a gauge on it, and see what's going on. I had a gauge that had a long enough hose, that I could hook it up, lay the gauge on the windshield, and drive around. That was very enlightening on a few performance problems I had on assorted vehicles.

I think it would be wise to check fuel sync as well.......
