If you were going from 5, to almost 7 mpg, I could see it. But, if you are already in double digits on fuel economy, are you really saving any money?

No. I geuss the 2mpg is worth more money to the guy that gets 5mpg than the guy that gets 20mpg.
So why bother doing anything for improving your vehicle

ONLY DO WORK TO SAVE MONEY IF YOUR GETTING 5MPG.
ITS NOT WORTH TRYING TO SAVE ANY MONEY ON A DAILY DRIVER IN TODAY'S ECONOMY.
I'll switch back to dino oil and lose the extra day trip to work so I can fill up more often.
You think the oil companies would love that?
I was getting five days on a tank, now six with Synthetic.
I'll go back to five. Tank of gas costs the same no matter how long it lasts.
Good call.

Its just not worth saving money in todays awesome economy.
Spend it if ya got it. Spend it if you don't.

Lighten up there Mr. Duck. The point I am trying to make here is, sure, you may save a few bucks on gas, but, you are spending it instead on oil changes. Do the math. See how it works out. If you are indeed saving money, then stick with it.

I have ran a few different types of oil in this truck. Did I buy the oils trying to get better mpg no, I bought the synthetic oils for metal on metal protection. That's it that's all, if my mpg went up that was a bonus, if it runs quieter that is a bonus, if it moves easier that is also a bonus.

I agree with merc. I run it to keep the noise down (which it does) to increase part life (which it does) and yep the mileage increase is a bonus. Overall, if you live in a four seasons climate your fooling yourself if your not running synthetic gear oil. The oil has a better additive package for shear and moisture too (read: winter). I changed my gears to 4.88 a while back, ran the regular gear oil for about 4,000 miles, drained it hot then refilled it with synthetic, never looked at it again, almost five years now. Hmmm... I guess I actually do look since I stick my finger in there to see what it looks like, never been milky so it stays where it is.

Side note, I had the pumpkin jacked up last week for a tire rotation, got to say as hard as I've been on it, less slack in the diff and gears than I expected since the gear change. Stuck a flashlight in there and all looks good, a little bit goobered out and it looked clear still. 46K miles on these gears with 37s more miles every day, couldn't be happier about the gears or the oil.

As for other synthetics...it's a crap shoot these days since the standards are higher than ever for oil in general with SN being the latest.

Ya. Your right. Sorry about being an ***.
Costs me $40 instead of $30 to do an oil change.
The HHR has a sensor that tells you when to change the oil.
I put in cheap Walmart oil and got 3500km out of it.
I switched to Mobil 1 and got 30,000km.

So 30000÷3500=8.57.
30×8.57=257.10
Yes. Its worth the $40.
Will I listen to the cars sensor again? No. Kinda.
I'm going to change at 15000km (9300 miles)
So $40 vs $128.

So with fuel milage and better qualities and protection etc.
It's cheaper to run synthetic.
Sure, it costs more to do vs dino oil but it truly is cheaper overall.
It is the big picture were looking at.

In that case, since you are actually using the synthetics as intended, (MUCH longer oil life, etc.) it is indeed a good idea for you.

My truck burns too much oil for anything to stay in there that long. (Yes, I do need to fix that.....)

I know people that run full synthetic and change every 3000.

I don't even try to argue with then

I've seen engines that don't burn oil but sure starr when you switch it to synthetic.

But switching is just wasting money if you do it like regular oil.
