Hello yall. I just wanted to add some information i've found and put it in one cental location to assist those who may need it. I will list some texh specs aswell as common upgrades that are done to these transmissions. This info is centered around a 1997 46re trans but since most of these models are almost the same the info may apply to these models: 46re/rh, 47re/rh, 48re/rh, 42re/rh, 44re/rh, a318, a500, a518, a618, a727.

Models whose core mechanicals are rhe same. ie forward drum, direct drum, planets, frictions, steels, reverse drums, etc. Some exections exist ie dieasel or v10. Mostly interchangable: a518 (46re/rh & 47re/rh), a618 (48re), and a727.
These also share the same gear ratios for 1,2,3,4,R.

These parts are a direct swap and can be changed to adjust 2nd gear **** quality and change clamping force applied to front band.
front band apply lever ratios:
46re=2.5
47re=3.8 optional 4.2
48re=4.2/5.1


Clutches/Frictionand/fibers and steels info:
thin fibers are for the rear drum and the thicker ones are for the front drum.
od direct clutch thickness .069
actual steel .070
old fric .063
od brake:
steel .070
old fric .085
forward clutch steel .

Uprgaded planets are available to replace your factory front or rear 4-pin aluminum housing to a 5-pin or 6 pin steel or aluminum version. highly recommended is the 5-pin steel front plane as i broke my 4-pin Alum stocker with alot of on/off throttle in manual low selection.




46re od direct clutch stepped plate vs 47 one. To add more clutches. 46= .315 & .220 48=.085" Stepped to .215


47 vs 46 re
47 bellhousing will only fit the v10 and diesel
Case is a liitle different? where?
47 uses a larger torque converter
gadoline 46 & 47 OD clutch as 5 discs and diesels have 6
46 OD direct clutch uses 8 frictions and 7 steels, 47 has 10 frictions and 9 steels
2003 48 has 12 inside spline plates and 11 outside spline plates. 04 went back to 10&9
46 has 3 discs in the front direct clutch, the 47 uses 4
47 uses a dual pin rear band and is wider
47/48 has a deeper pan

46 47 48
Front Direct clutch. 3. 4. 5
rear forward clutch. 3. 4. 4
Od (brake) clutch. 4. 5 6
Od direct clutch. 8. 10. 23*
reverse band width. 6 1/4"

od brake clich. if i had a 48re brake clutch bottom reaction plate and delete the wavy smap ring (and delete top plate) i could have 6 clutches in rhere. otherwise deleteing the wavy snap ring and top plate and re-using 46re bottom reaction plate will net 5 clithes and will be same setup as a 47re. ie the 46/47 vottom pressure plate is the same. the diff beteen the 46/47 is the lack of a top plate and this room for one mor fric clutches. the diff between the 47/48 and its 5 vs 6 frics is only yhat the nottom plate is stepped.

Misc..

#9 thrustwasher can be swapped from plastic to steel version on reverse drum.

Double reverse band cannot be added to a 46re as the case is missing a feature that allows the second band retaining pin to be held as found in a 48re case. No known way of making one fit.

Diesel HD front band is a direct swap and upgrade.


The correct "factory" location for a 727 temp sender was in the rear servo pressure test port. That plug is a 1/8" NPT thread form


waterproofing
"We placed a bolt in the stock vent location (behind the Torque Converter in the Pump) and sealed it off. We then drilled and tapped a fitting in the case. All I have to do now is run a line up to the firewall and install a taller van dipstick." or tap the stock pump vent, add an angled fitting, drill a hole in the housing and run the line directly out and up the firewall.

reasons to buy 47re for parts:
-3.8 ratio intermidiate lever. $22 new
-direct clutch with one extra friction
-forward clutch ine extra friction
-wider rear band for reverse
-planetaries may have extra pinion or two in case of 48re


The PR (pressure regulator) adjusting screw on the valve body is set so the spring is flush with the inside edge of the retainer. It is recommended increasing up to 5 turns clockwise to increase line pressure.

PR line pressure adjustment screw on the valve body changes line pressure approx. 1 2/3 psi per revolution. Ex. 6 turns which increases the pressure about 10 psi @ closed throttle.

1. There are three shims to adjust the shift points. Adding shims to the tv creates a higher shift point. removing shims or grinding the tv valve drops shift points.

band adjuster bolts can be torqued using an 8 point socket.
