will crank but Not start. Help!
so i have a 95 ram 1500 4x4 5.9L i just bought a while back to have a "daily driver" and keep miles off the new one....Did the plenum and intake manifold heres all ive replaced in the process
coolant temp sensor in front by thermostat
i believe the oil something sensor on back of intake by the EGR
new EGR
180 degree thermostat
plenum and intake manifold gaskets, Bolts are all grade 8
cleaned throttle body and sensors, Throttle body gasket
Cap and Rotor, plugs and wires
the gap is right on the plugs wires have to be good tried using the old set of wires also, got everything buttoned up and ready to start after gasket job tried starting and it would NOT start i got it to start briefly a few times but it dies right away now all it does is crank and smell of gasoline, ive checked everything plug wire routing making sure everythings connected good, i did however forget to put the bracket on the distributor when i first tried starting it, after realizing i put it back on and it still wont start not sure if i moved the distributor or what but i put the cap and rotor back on exactaly how i took them off, im guessing ive messed up the timing somewhere throughout this process but when i do try to start it smells like gas, ive got good fuel pressure, the gas is good gas, no leaks in fuel lines. the sensor inside the distributor has power to it and is plugged in and lines up right and everything
anyone have any clue where to start on trying to get it up and running im without a vehicle untill its back running the wifes been driving the new one because she drives alot less, ive gotta be missing something somewhere do i need to take #1 plug out and assure by manually cranking it clockwise ive got it at TDC? then try going for a start? haha im lost

If your distributor turned when you tried to start with the clamp off, your fuel synch. is out of whack. Here's a couple of links that might help.

Turning the distributor adjusts fuel synch., not ignition timing. Ignition timing is controlled by the PCM.

ok Thank you...im working a bunch of hours this week/weekend i have saturday off ill try to get around to it and let ya know what happens i figured it was either ignition timing or fuel sync but its always best to get others opinions before assuming and spending money on stuff that may not fix it
Did you get the grounds all hooked back up? There are two up by the power steering pump that you had to remove to get the harness out of the way. Make sure they are clean, and tight.
Check your temp sensor, make sure the sensor is for a TWO wire plug. Given that it sounds a lot like it is flooding, I think that is the first thing I would check. Also make sure that it is indeed the right sensor.... and is plugged in nice and tight.
Your truck has two temp sensors, one for the PCM, (two wire), and one for the gauge (one wire). If they gave you the wrong sensor, the PCM thinks it is -40 degrees, and positively DUMPS gas into the cylinders. Floods out right quick.

yeah everything electrical is hooked up and getting power. I did Time it to TDC distributor and rotor are facing #1 slot on cap and sensor. the timing/fuel sync are dead on Thank you for the thread links on that by the way it helped alot!!....BUT it starts then immediately dies unless i rev it, i did however unplug the IAC and it will stay running at about 2000rpm and its a little rough. bought a new IAC installed it and it still wont run with that plugged in, cleaned the old IAC tried reinstalling it and it didnt work either so ive made some progress just stuck here now, ANY suggestions on what it may be or what to look at are appreciated im stuck haha. Thanks guys
Unhook that battery for a few minutes, turn the headlights on, (nothing will happen) turn off headlights, reconnect battery. With everything hooked up, turn the key to On, but, don't start it yet, count to ten. Start truck. If you have to, hold your foot on the gas a bit to keep it running. It needs to relearn the idle.
ok Will do, i get home tonight around 745 ill give it a shot, Should i just disconnect negative. i did all this yesterday when it kept dying and i called it a night i unhooked the negative terminal should i just hook it back up after i cycle the headlights then tun key on for 10 seconds and give it a start? when i had it running yesterday it was just really rough when i gave it gas trying to keep it running, how long should i keep it going before killing it and seeing how it worked?

If it has been disconnected all night, just hook it back up. Pretty sure anything else that holds a charge in there will be discharged by now.
Once it starts, hold it running for about a minute to let things clear out, and then slowly start backing off the gas pedal. See if it will stay running.
