If you want to build a true boosted engine you should be running 8 to1 pistons or close to that. The higher your compression level the better your timing had better be and the higher octane level you'll need for fuel. If you're building the engine and are going to add boost then contact one of the supercharger companies and ask them what they recommend for the engine. Ask about compression ratio and cam spec's. They can tell you what they feel is required. Also look up a company called Split Second as they have stuff to help with your tuning.
OOPS forgot to add something.
The lower your compression ratio is the more boost you can run. So at 9-9.5 to 1 you might only be able to get away with 5-7 pounds of boost. But if you drop the compression ratio to 8 to 1 then you can get away with 14-18 pounds of boost. Something to think about.

Nothing can compare to the power boost of forced induction. Of course, it ain't cheap either. Used to be a selection of bolt-on kits for our trucks, but, not so much anymore. They can occasionally be found on the used market, but, don't expect anything new. (new they ran around 3K, and up......)
Trick is, to balance compression ratio, and boost level. Which way builds more power (low compression/high boost vs high compression/low boost.) I don't know....... I think low compression, with moderate boost would be more reliable though, and still give you some serious power.
