I think your 7 is a Z, which corresponds to 5.9 gas engine. (MPFI) So far as I can tell, there was no "7" for engine designation 94-02.

Edit: Update. a vin 7 engine showed up in 98. It's the 24 valve 5.9 diesel. Your 94 did NOT have one from the factory.

thanks for the info.i recheck the vin today and it`s definatley a 7.from the spec sheet i got online that says it`s a 5.9 l ho diesel (2001),so that makes no scenes at all.so something is really screwy.i`m just trying to find out the right specs so i can get the right ecm.oh by the way it`s a 2500 not 1500.how can i tell what motor and year i have?like i said this truck was built down here in mexico so something could have been been tampered with.

If the 8th digit is indeed a 7, then, the VIN is no good. That designation didn't show up until 98.5, with the 24 valve cummins. An engine that did not exist (except maybe on some drawing board) yet.

So, odd and strange question, is your odometer on the cluster mechanical, or electronic?

You can look on the side of the engine block, and it will tell you what displacement it is. Is it a V-8? Straight Six? V-6??? V-10?

Nope, just what's cast into it, and that will only tell you displacement.
