limited slip rebuild?
I will be doing a gear swap here soon and was wondering if I should rebuild the lsd? I found an article by fourwheeler but was wondering what your thoughts were on doing so. Also is anyone near the Beaumont tx area that has done a gear swap and would like to lend a helping hand. food and beer would be provided.
honestly, you might as well just throw some new parts in the limited slip unit while you're already in there! You have to remove the whole damn thing anyway and I dont think it's that difficult to replace the clutch packs once you have it out. When I go to 4.56s eventually I'm just gonna have them rebuild the clutch pack as well...i dont trust myself to do that type of work since one little mistake can wreck the entire rear end.
i just took out the OE limited slip since they are junk and put in the Detroit locker truetrac limited slip. its all gears in there so no clutch discs to replace and no clips that can break and destroy your rear end. i love mine.
If you're going to put it back in then yes, you should rebuild it so it's fresh. Mine started out as an open diff so I put a Truetrac in when way back when and I love it. Last year I put one up front.

Agreed on the input here.
1. Rebuild the LSD. It's actually not that bad. I had mine rebuilt by dealership (before I figured things out lol) and ran it for 5 years w/o issue until changing my axle altogether.
2. If you are going to change gears, best to do it same time with LSD rebuild or change carrier to what others mention. Consider these options based on your anticipated application (e.g,. type of offroad, live in snow dominant area, ice, etc.).

I have rebuilt many a lsd there is not much to rebuilding the factory lsd very easy, most should be able to do it themselves. The only thing that can go wrong is the clutch packs and the retainer clips, thats it, just under $150 in parts.
The FSM has most of the info needed right in it no need to go to another forum to get this info. I thought linking to other forums was frowned upon here on DF.
The main reason for the factory lsd to fail is by NOT using the additive for the LSD, don't add that and it will not last long.

You dont just put diff oil in and forget about it. You wouldn't expect your engine to last 100k between oil changes would you?
The "trash lok" is perfectly fine for street and stock use.
Of course there are better traction aids out there if you have the pockets....
I would just rebuild the LSD unless you are serious about off roading
