+1 (again). Replace the thermostat then backflush the coolant in the heater core. I still need to do this second part. My know-it-all friends tried to assure me that it wouldn't be necessary to backflush the heater core when we were putting the truck back together after the plenum repair and timing chain replacement. Well, it was necessary because now I still hear gurgling in the heater core.
My temp gauge wouldn't go past 130 until I replaced the thermostat. Now it hovers between 210 and 130 when it gets warm. The thermostat is a $10 part. It's not a difficult task to replace it. I now have not air coming out of the vents, but I'm guessing it's not 160 degrees like it should be. BTW, it took about 10 - 15 mins for my truck to initially warm up enough to tell that the gauge was working after the install.
