Default 1998 dodge ram 1500 gauge cluster swap

I'm curious if I could replace my current gauge cluster (that doesn't have a tachometer) with one from the same year with a tach? Direct fit or would I have to modify wiring? Is there a way to reprogram odometer?

Supposedly, it's a direct swap. However, some folks have had little success actually getting the tach to work..... all the wiring is there, but, no signal. It's odd. So far as I know, the programming is already there in the PCM, and it *should* be sending the signal.... but, it doesn't. No clue why. For some it works just fine though, so, certainly worth a shot.

I believe you need a pretty expensive piece of equipment to update the odometer. May be a dealer-only thing.

Then I'll go ahead and try it out then. I hate not having a tach and having a fuel gauge that's almost bigger than my speedometer is. Hopefully the dealership won't charge an arm and a leg to correct the mileage.

Isn't the mileage stored in the BCM and PCM ? I know it is with jeeps , can't see it being different .

I'd think direct swap as long as the truck was 98 or newer with same digital odometer .

Not sure on that... some folks have done this, maybe one of them will chime in......

GM stored it in the cluster.

I found a cluster on ebay and they claim they can put correct mileage on it before it ships, for $60 for the cluster it'll be worth trying. I still don't understand why the fuel gauge is so big (or why the distributer cap is in such a stupid place but I'll save that rant)

The gas gauge is all about geometry. The larger diameter gives the needle a longer sweep, so you can't actually watch it move, like you can the smaller ones......

That makes sense, I always assumed it was for the elderly who can't see.

That's just as likely. I was being facetious in my earlier post.
