on my 98 4Hi is towards the seat, 4Lo is way under the dash. 4hi isn't much better than 2Hi is your tires are slipping...least not on mine. had to go 4Lo just to get the front up on the ramps cause one rear tire was on ice in the driveway.

About the 4wd light on the dash, how can I determine if the light is burned out? I've replaced the switch that the actuator hits to tell the light to come on, but it seems like I have 4wd. I can't really tell because my front tires are crap. (Getting 4 new ones as I'm writing this 265/75 16)

Got to try it on my way home and its kinda weird. 4wd engaged (4 hi) I periodically get a pop sound going straight down the road. Road conditions were snow covered. It sounded like it came from driver's side or center. Still no light on the dash. Any ideas?

Pull the connector out of the switch, with the ignition on, short the terminals in the connector together. (just use a paper clip, or some such, just make sure it doesn't touch anything else. Check and see if the lite is on. (it should be.) If it isn't, make sure you are getting power TO the switch.

So that light is literally just switched on/off? Basically a dummy light at that point.
