Default Cruise Control

2001 Ram 1500

The other day I notice my cruise control isn't working. If I push the on button several times, sometimes the "Cruise Control" indicator words will flash then go away but that's it. Any ideas where to start troubleshooting?

Mine doesn't even turn on when I press the button so I'd be happy to know.

It could be a broken vacuum line. The vacuum line runs under the battery and is known to break in that area. It could also be a bad switch on the steering wheel, they can also go bad. rockauto.com sells new cruise control switches, and there not very expensive if you need a replacement.

Well cruize would still electronically go on in the absence of any vaccum? So must be my switch.

Grab the FSM and on page 481 is a table showing the resistance of each switch. You could test the switches to be sure.

Regardless of vacuum, it looks like the speed control light should illuminate on the dash when pressing the on button.

Also it looks like doing the switches requires removal of the air bag, so practice air bag safety

Eureka! It turns out the electrical connection under the battery was disconnected. I had some body work done last year following a minor accident and they must have disconnected it and failed to reconnect it.
Thanks for the help.

Will the 96-97 Cruise switch work in a 95. I noticed there is a specific off switch on the 95 but not not on the 96-97.

Have a look at the wiring diagrams for the two switches. (newer, and older) See if they match up. All the switches really do is send a modified voltage to the PCM, and the PCM takes it from there.
