Auto-transmission swap 5.9 2wd 1996 to 1997 connections questions
Hi all,
Thank you in advance for the advice and incites.
I have a 1996 extended cab 2wd with a 5.9. The transmission has what research tells me is a vehicle speed sensor on the tail shaft. my replacement, which came out of a '97 5.9 does not have the same sensor (pictured).
Is this as simple as swapping the transmissions or is some splicing/rewiring involved. I'm sure the new tranny will bolt right up, it's the wiring that has me concerned.
Has anyone done this particular swap? Am I missing something?
I look forward to your input.
transmission from a '97 2wd 1500. no VSS

I'm finding conflicting info in this. (See pics) My 96 4WD had it on the drivers side(non screw in style) Not sure when it was changed but there is another one that screws in(bottom of the od housing). May have to see what your old one had. You may have to get another tail housing.
This is for a 4X4 but the 4X2 style tail is the same way.

well first let me thanks guys.
Because my truck has the top picture (whole and all) and the new trans has the bottom picture. the best I can figure my '97 had a '98 or newer trans. Is that possible? The story on this trans is that I had it rebuilt and 4 months later my dad borrowed the truck and blew it up. I pulled a lot of parts off of it including this transmission.
I figured when the time came it would be an easy swap. Maybe not.
Is there a way to install the newer trans in the '96?
thanks again guys I love forums it makes the DIY guys life easy.

It's possible.... but, the speedo *shouldn't* work, and the ABS, and Brake lites should be on constantly. Unless someone altered the electronics to use the rear wheel speed sensor in place of the VSS on the trans...... Which I supposed would be doable..... Now you have me unsure of just when that particular change took place.... I am (was..) certain that the 97 trucks should have a gear driven VSS in the tailshaft of the trans, or t-case, depending on how many drive wheels ya get.
