sudden transmission problems
I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 4x4, 5.9L eng, automatic transmission with overdrive. Have owned truck since new has 187,000 miles. never had any tranny issues of any kind until now. Drove truck the other day about 80 miles stopped at store on way home, got back in truck started up put in reverse backed out of parking spot put in drive and truck would barely move, put in D2 got truck to move down road about 25 mph for few miles put back in Drive and made it home 5 more miles no problems. went back out later to check it out and drive around nbhd, truck would not move at all reverse or fwd with eng revved up it would barely move. put in 4wd and could get it move around a little better. changed fluid and filter, didn't find any metal shavings other than fuzz on magnet. fluid didn't smell burnt, and no sludge at all in bottom of pan but fluid looked pretty dirty (never has been changed before). after fluid and filter changed started and let idle for a while to warm up to check fluid level. Truck ran and shifted perfect for about 2-3 miles then went right back to same thing, will barely move again in all gears, including reverse. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Can the transmission just go suddenly like this without any warning or slipping?
There's a giant teansmission thread that is forced to the front of the forum (don't ask why it's been closed since 2011 or something) it's called transmission corner.. I guess these guys really like that thread for some reason so they force it to the front page. It might help you
You're fortunate to have got 187,000 miles out of the transmission -- most don't make it that far. It's probably just about time for a rebuild, or even a Mega Viper.
MonteC's Transmission Corner, mentioned by quarz36, is locked and stickied because MonteC has found better things to do with his time.

I was expanding upon what you'd said, not correcting it.
Personally, I'm glad it's locked so it can't fill up with repetitious crap that would just make it that much harder to find the good stuff that MonteC put there. I can't think of anything one might need to know about the 46R that's not in the manual that's not in there.

I looked thru about 9-10 pages of the transmission thread you mention but didn't really find any situations quite like mine, where anybody did a fluid and filter change and then it worked great for short distance afterward. I had a guy at parts store tell me that if I changed fluid and filter again it might fix it due to when I changed fluid I could have only got about half of dirty fluid out and rest remains in TC. When I say transmission ran good after fluid change I mean it shifted just as smooth as before the problem started and then it quit just as suddenly as before. I know it couldn't be electrical because a fluid/filter change couldn't temporarily fix electrical problem. You would think if transmission was toast even a fluid/filter change couldn't make it work again even for short distance. Could it be possible that fluid was so dirty that after running a few miles and cycling old fluid in TC back thru made it quit again?
You need to see what your line pressure is. Transmissions need fluid pressure to work. Low or no pressure it don't move. If you don't have the tools and a gauge take it somewhere and they will check it out. From what you are describing it sounds like a low-no pressure issue.
Try this:
Crawl under the truck. On the drivers side of the trans, there is an 8 pin connector. Unplug it.
Go for a drive, (if it will....) keeping in mind, you will have ZERO automatic function, no O/D, or TCC lockup, and it WILL set some trans codes. If the truck drives, and shifts into the gear you tell it to, when you tell it to, you have an electronic problem, that can be solved for 100 bucks or so, plus fluid. If it still doesn't wanna move.... it's rebuild time.
