Default Drive line noise

Hey guys it's been along time sence I've been on. I just got back into driving my 1500. It's hard to say no to all the power that cummins has to offer. But thought I should drive the old ram some. I'm having a noise in the drive line. I'm thinking it's from the transfer case. When I put the truck in gear I get a clunk. When I get off the throttle I get a clunk. It's not like a chain skipping teeth. Could it be slack in the tcase or maybe a broken snap ring? Just looking for any help. The truck just rolled over 95000.

Check u-joints in the rear driveshaft first. Then have a look at the rear pinion. See if all that is ok.

A few years ago I broke the bolts that hold the rear u joint in and it shoved the slip joint all the way into the tcase. I replaced all the u joints then and have only put maybe 3000 miles on them.

I also had the 4.10s put in a few years ago they seem to be noise free.

I would check 'em anyway. Just for giggles. (and, it's easy.)

If they seem ok, drop the driveshaft, pull the tailhousing off the t-case, and check the snap ring. (you can also check chain slop at that point.)

Going to all that bother, I recommend adding a few minutes more and installing a transfer case saver.

And here's why:

A borked snap ring will cause that, but you're not going to break a transfer case saver.

Well I pulled the driveshaft today. I found the output shaft housing has both top bolt ears broke off. The snap ring was not broken. I went ahead and took it off and installed the tcase saver. How much play should be in the output shaft. The bearing is good but when I spin it left and right it has maybe an 1/8 inch of play before it turns the front drive shaft. The case seams to be leaking at all the splits. How big of a deal is it to split the case and reseal everything?

That's actually pretty good...... Not very much slop at all.

I don't think there is a gasket between case halves...... sure wouldn't hurt to drop it out, open it up, clean it out, and reseal it. Having a jack to help makes it easier. Not too bad of a job.
