Default Torque Converter Instal

Gotta quick question on torque converters guys, so I pulled my motor and the torque converter came off with the motor (even after I removed the 4 bolts form the flex plate) My question is how do I index it back onto the transmission and did I damage any pumps in the transmission by removing the torque converter with the motor?

Since it is already out, replace the seal on the trans. Chances are good you damaged it on removal in any event.

There are two notches on the t/c, that engage dogs on the trans pump. Line 'em up, stuff it in, and you are done. T/C should be recessed back into the bellhousing at least an inch or two when fully seated. (you may have to draw it out a bit to thread the bolts in, once the engine is back in place.)

Does that seal just pry out? Or do I need a puller? And what would that seal be called a parts store, trans front seal?

Or torque converter seal. And yep, it's just like any other seal. Can pry it out with a screwdriver, drive it back in with the right-sized piece of pipe. Trying to just tap around the outer edge with a hammer is a major pain... and rarely works. Seal driver would be REALLY nice, if you can get your hands on one.

okay I got the seal! I lined the dogs up on the pump best as I could, is there any other way to tell if the dogs are in the t/c ? I have my torque convertor in and its recessed into the housing an inch, but I just wanna be sure because the t/c wiggles up and down "slightly" with my hands.

Sounds like you have it in place. Bolt the trans up, and the t/c should still be a little bit back from the flexplate. (and should spin freely.)

Is there any reason to fill the t/c before install?

Not really, just start the truck in neutral, so it will fill right away.

Gassers will have the torque converter recessed 3/4" or so.
Diesels (and maybe V10, never worked on one) the torque converter actually sticks out a bit.

That's one point of clarification not made in the ATSG manual.
