Love my 01 Ram but i want more power. Engine swap?
Hey guys i bought a used '01 Ram about a year ago and it has about 115k Miles on it now. When i bought it used it already came with A CAI and a Exhaust system, I think flow-masters. The exhaust tips are really rusted out but it doesn't matter too much. I want to get more power and started looking at Hughesengines and thought about the 360 to 408 Stroker kit and all that but i think that will be cost lot more than buying a engine and swapping it. I don't know where to start on looking at what engines and how easy/hard it would be to swap mine. I was looking at perhaps buying a New LS3 Crate and do that but i'm not sure how well it will be. I don't have too much experience besides me and some friends of mine recently have been doing a Kit car. We swapped a Miata drive train and engine to a kit car chassis and just got it running the other week. I'd rather do it with some friends so i don't have to pay a shop or mechanic for it but it could be an option. Thanks for all your help and suggestions! Also my truck is the 360 5.9L
Swapping in an engine from another manufacturer is gonna be a serious exercise, simply because of how things work on the dodge...... Your best bet would be to pick up a chrysler engine, that will simply bolt right in, and hook right up, and then a bit of tuning.
What engine you want, depends on what you want to do with your truck, and how much you want to spend.
Welcome to DF!

Thanks for the welcome! I would like to be in the 400hp range Hence the LS3 Choice on it. What engine would you recommend to swap? Currently price is non exsistant so anything id guess under 15k? Edit: I found this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hp.../make/chrysler Would this be reliable and be an easier swap than an LS?

There is no kit to swap that 440 into your truck. Also you need to be sure your swap is emission compliant. You can get 400 HP easy with a 408 build as long as it is done right. To build a good running 408 your looking at $5,000 plus or minus. Once you get the engine built you then need to get a tuner for the engine. Right now two people are doing tunes. Hemifever & FlynnRyan. You have to buy a SCT tuner to load the tunes onto your truck.
Trying to do a swap with a LS engine is going to cost you tons more than just building your 360 engine. Also have you looked at the sticky at the top of the page? It is about plenum leaks and if you have one your power could be way down on your truck.
Last is if you were to due the 408 build there is a company working on a supercharger kit for our engines. They should have them ready for release in the next 6-12 months.

I feel like building my 360 would be much harder than a swap and also i would like to see about some better gas mileage. I would hope that whatever i can get would be able to get above 15mpg. Any crate engines that would be able to be swapped into the 01?
If you want that kind of mileage from your heavy brick, look at diesels. Either that, or something with cylinder shut-down capability. (but, don't expect 15 mph out of anything while driving around in town, unless you put in a V-6, but, that's going the wrong way as far as power goes.)
You can have fuel economy, or, you can have power, you are not going to get both out of a 5000 pound truck. Just not gonna happen....
Building the 408 would be FAR easier than adapting an LS motor to your truck. If you went that route, you would need to also deal with ALL the instruments in the dash, as almost every single one of them gets' its cue from the PCM, (via the central timer module.) As no other manufacturer uses that particular convoluted system, you would be starting from scratch there. No way to adapt it to the GM PCM.
408 you could build to any power level you want, drop it in, tune it, and be down the road. One thing to consider though, is after you drop in a more powerful motor, also gonna need to address the trans. Stock 46RE won't survive long behind a 408...... so, look at 2-3K there as well.

Alright would you suggest a prebuilt 408 from a site like summit or go the route from hughes which could be around 10k for all the parts and stuff. The engines on summit were like 5-7k

Slow down and do your homework.
Your best bang for the buck would be a 408, AND NOT ONE FOR A FORD, Why do you even think that would be an option????....SHEESH
Get a MAGNUM 360 block and start gathering parts...Lot's of parts.
