That's would I would be concerned about. If one of those let go on the highway..... Well, that would be far more pucker-factor than I would really care to think about.

Hahaha thats true HeyYou. I would love to replace the rear axle but finding one is hard around here for some reason... maybe one day.

Found the source of the rear end noise. What do you guys think? looks like spalling? this is the rear pinion bearing, maybe got to hot and insufficient lubrication?Name:  image_zps0rqmsxfu.jpg

Well she's all back together and appears to be driving well. I guess we'll see how long she lasts. I took my time setting it up so I think all will be well. Gear pattern came out pretty good but I was concerned about backlash. Before tear down backlash was .012", should I have kept it at that considering the ring and pinion have worn together with that backlash?

I set it at the loose end of the spec from the manual I was using, 0.008". But now I wonder if should have left it at 0.012...

Should be ok. Consider some of your backlash was from wear. Don't think it'll be a problem.
