Default 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 shifting problems

I recently put a used transmission in my truck. It came out of a truck just like mine, same year, engine, 4x4 and even the same color.

I've had several problems getting it to work right. Now it won't go into 4th gear! It hasn't since I put it in. Can you tell me why it won't?

Also I'm getting a tranny is hot light. I can't see any kinked lines, so any ideas why? Can it be because it won't go into going down the highway?

Please help I'm stuck and frustrated because of all the problems I'm having with this tranny! I can't afford to buy a new one.

Any ideas about the cost of rebuilding one and how hard is it?

A 5 speed manual swap would take care of a lot of transmission stress. The swap really is not that hard, probably do it for a 1000 bucks, sometimes even cheaper than that!

so im assuming since your having trouble getting it in 4th only that the other 3 are shifting fine. ARE you sure its not starting in 2nd. Do you have any codes. If your truck isnt engaging overdrive, you might need a new overdrive solenoid, its on the outside of the valve body under the pan.

Did the trans work right in the truck you pulled it out of? Sounds a lot like an electronics mis-match. (2000+ electronics....)

your truck will not go into overdrive if your trans temp light is on. its a built in defense mechanism to save the tranny. If your cooler lines are sound, i suspect your low on fluid, make sure your fluid is full. check in neutral when warmed up.

I don't know if the light came on before or after I tried to see if it would go into fourth. But now I'm getting a check engine light, I tested it and got a code for the governor pressure sensor offset. I have a new one coming in now. Is the overdrive sensor near this on?

There are two different circuits in the trans, governor sensor/solenoid are on one, (and I do believe both are five volts) then there are the TCC, and O/D solenoids, which are 12 volts. If you are getting a code for governor solenoid, I would check connections at both the PCM, and the trans first, and if those look good, replace the sensor/solenoid set. (governor)

the overdrive solenoid is connected to the side of valve body. you have to drop it down to access it. Its a pain in the ***.

The governor pressure sensor and solenoid is in the valve body. Is the OD sensor next to this? And if my tranny will not go into OD will this cause it to overheat?

O/D and TCC solenoids are further up in the trans. Can be a real pain to change.

The PCM disables O/D to PREVENT overheating. That's why they tell you not to tow in O/D.
