Default Uh oh, problems I didnt make

So, working on a truck at work (96 sst 2wd 360 46re)

The truck has been sitting for a long while and it smokes, not the plenum gasket though this truck Will smoke out the neighborhood it's that bad but that's not the issue I'm questioning yet

When we started the truck up and moved it out of the shop it's sitting at like 2300 rpm for idle, I was thinking stuck iac or something in that nature but after my boss took it around the block and got it warmed up he came into the shop grabbed a t20 (or t25) torx bit popped the hood and turned the idle down

I asked him what he was doing and he told me that's how you adjust the idle

Am I missing something here I thought everything was computer controlled. To get to the screw he said he drilled out the aluminum cover over the screw. What has been messed up I didn't see the iac unplugged and there was no check engine light

Usually you dont need to touch it, It's set at the factory and capped. I would suspect a vac leak or possibly a bad pvc valve-excessive blow by. Have seen worn throttle body (shaft going threw it) worn enough to create a vac leak raising idle.

I agree with Moparite, should never have to adjust the idle..... Either a vacuum leak, bad IAC, stuck open PCV, or similar.

Yeah you should never adjust that screw. It has the tamper cover for a reason. The iac will compensate for that being out of adjustment to a point until it runs out of travel.

UNLESS someone tampered with it before you bought the truck and then the issue causing the high idle ( vacuum leak, IAC ) was repaired and the idle adjustment never put back.. this is what I ran into with the SS/T.. once plenum was repaired the TB was adjusted back to factory and the computer hard reset...

waiting on my 50MM TB now from 1999blkdak

Did the boss have to remove the plug covering the adjustment or was it already gone and just tweaked it with a screwdriver?

If it was already gone, someone probably already had messed with it.

Back story time

In may I seen the truck they were asking 1000 for it, I scrambled I had 950 I was going to go down and see if he could at least drop the price 50 bucks
It was sold it was moved in the lot with the price taken off the windshield, sad day spent the money on rc stuff I think

Now about 6 mom ths later the truck is still at the shop. Sold. Taunting me, but it's got problems. I'm not sure if my boss was the one to drill put the cover or who did it, but it wouldn't idle worth a s**t today when I started it up to see if the smoke stop worked at all or not
I ended up just sitting in the truck with my foot on the gas holding it at 1300 rpm then said p**s on it I don't have time for this and shutting it down. I'm not getting paid to mess with it, the guy that bought it needs to come get it and get it off the lott lol

Maybe find out who bought it, and see if they want to sell it, doesn't seem like they are in any big hurry to get it...... Anything that sat around our shop that long, we filed for an abandoned title, and sent it on its way.
