Could someone give me details on doing a swap from gas 360 to deisel 5.9?

My truck is a 98 2500 4wd. As for the deisel engine, it would be whichever one u could find. Looking for a wrecked truck so I would everything I would need to do the swap. I'd prefer a 24 valve. I'm just not sure exactly what all the swap would involve. I know the obvious... Engine, electronics, fuel system, exhaust.

Smog testing isn't an issue here in Louisiana. Ideally I'd like to put in a 24 valve and run the NV4500 rather than the 47RE. Would take a little more work since I currently run the 46RE. But would be a much much better truck once the swap was made. Right?

Find a 98.5 or newer (that's when the 24valve started) truck with a manual trans. If it had the same bodystyle/bed length as yours, that would be nice too..... buy the whole truck. Transfer over the drivetrain, (engine and trans, your t-case *should* work) and electrical, which is probably going to include the cluster....... and the fuel system. It's doable, eminently possible, but, a LOT of work. Might be cheaper/easier to just find a diesel truck that you can just start driving.......

Also, keep in mind, it seems that diesel owners think their trucks are made of solid gold, and price them accordingly.

Exactly!! That's why I want to do the conversion using a wrecked truck. I would never find a truck like mine with the same miles in a deisel for anywhere near what I could buy an old wrecked one for. My truck only has 130k mikes. I've already put a newer 360 and its for about 300 miles on a new tranny. (It sat up too long before I got it) thought about just selling but I like the idea of a project.

if you want to go the easy route (simpler is usually better) go with a gen1 Cummins 12v
no wiring required accept fuel the fuel shutoff(1 wire) everything else is all mechanical. And there's a lot of easy mods to pump up the power in those as well..

So in this case I wouldn't have to fool with the computer and such? Just the fuel system, exhaust and tranny?

+1 for 44dakota, 12v is the way to go. One wire. Our deisel mech drives a one ton ford but what is under the hood? A 12v cummins. He does alot of pulling and in his opinion they are the easiest and cheapest to (mod up) work on.
