ASK ON DODGE FORUM WHAT YEAR DODGE TRUCKS CHANGED FROM HAVING THE PLASTIC HALF WAY UP THE TAILGATE TO THE FULL METAL TAILGATE? I KNOW IT WAS LIKE 96 OR MAYBE 98 BUT IM NOT SURE REALLY. I NEED TO KNOW IF A 2001 DASH WILL BOLT INTO A 95 OR IF THERE ARE ALOT OF PROBLEMS TO BE HAD WITH THAT SWAP. IS IT A DIRECT BOLT IN OR NOT?

No clue on the plastic on the tailgate....

The newer dash should bolt right into the older trucks, I don't think any of that changed. The floor, however, DID change in 98, and installing a newer interior in an older truck requires some fab work.

 

Dashes are different, may work but I can't say for sure.


Plastic on tailgate went all the way through 01 and stopped with the remodel in 02

 

The plastic was related to the trim level. It was on SLT and Laramie. In 2000 it became scarce and I've never seen a 2500 from 2001-02 with it. My 1999 1500 ST never had it either. As HeyYou mentioned, 98 was the mid-life change when they added the optional QuadCab so with the four doors, the floor panels and sides changed a bit. I would think though that the dash would interchange. Depends on where / how the bolts align.

 

Tailgate plastic was factory regardless of trim level or year. If you don't have it, it was either removed or tailgate was replaced and trim never added back

 

Mine doesn't have the plastic trim, nor are there any signs that is was ever there....

If your truck has the side moldings it has the plastic on the tailgate. Both of my 96's have neither.
