Gonna tear it up and see for myself.....that passenger side upper nut is a BITCH...tear down is tomorrow. I'll let the forum know....

I assume this is WAYYYYY too slack. Everything else looks and feels good.

Holy crap.

Is there any evidence on the upper gear of the chain slipping on it? (wouldn't surprise me.)

Was the snap ring in place?

Snap rings were all in place...there are marks on the gears that suggest the chain slipped.... Luckily nothing is broken teeth wise

surprisingly the case just has some scratches. after resurrecting the truck I only drove it in 4WD a total of maybe 10 feet due to the bad noise. the part I dont get: the chain is only active in 4L/H right? the truck has been sitting a couple of years, before that I cant even remember how long it had been since I used 4WD, so I don't know why it is so stretched. I do remember many years ago using 4WD several times on pavement (I know thats a no no) and being amused at the wheel hop when I turned...maybe that did it?
