Default Steering gear box

Hey guys, I have a 1998 dodge ram 2500. I have to replace the steering gear box and didn't want to just buy a replacement one if there were aftermarket boxes. Other than ones that are 500 dollars. As a 17 year old in high school making minimum wage I can't really afford to pay that much. I've looked but can't really find any other than replacement ones or borgeson's 500 dollar one. Any input would be appreciated.

I've got a RedHead Gear Box on my truck, I'm happy with it, much better than a lot of those you buy at the parts store. It's $346 +$35 shipping. There is a Core Charge, but you get that back when you send in your old one.

Yep, Redhead, or Borgeson are the only two other choices, aside from stock replacement.... And I REALLY don't care for the 'rebuilt' units from the parts stores. Chances are good that your replacement box will be worse off than the one you are replacing.....

If your box is just sloppy, could try adjusting it first, instead of outright replacement.....

What are the advantages of the redhead over the rebuilt ones from the part store? Is there anything such as it being tighter, or less turns lock to lock?

Much higher quality rebuild, less slop, lasts longer, looks prettier.

Is there any difference in the turns lock to lock? The borgeson that I read of said there were fewer turns which sounds amazing considering its about 5 or 6 turns lock go lock

They would call that quick ratio. Call redhead and see if they offer that in your application.

Redhead has both an 18:1, and a 15:1 for your 1998 truck. Both are the same price...about $380, after you return your old one (core). I second Hey You's suggestion about adjusting your current gearbox first. Also check the power steering fluid for discoloration while your at it, and change it if necessary. Those procedures are on this site, or in the manual.
Back to the new Redhead box....when you can afford it.
I had the same question about the two different ratios. I wrote to Harvey Foster at Redhead, and here is his response:

Below is some information on the two different ratios.
15:1 Ratio:
-3 turns from lock to lock.
-Typically found on 1500 pick ups.
-Not designed for towing, hauling, or plowing.
-Not designed for major lift kits and oversize tires.
-Ideal for everyday driving.

18:1 Ratio:
-4 turns from lock to lock.
-Typically found on 2500/3500 trucks.
-Designed for towing, hauling, and plowing.
-Designed for major lift kits and oversize tires.
-Ideal for working trucks.

Hey the link stopped working? I was just about to order mine, but it looks like they messed up their website.
