Default Transmission stuck in first

So I had a transmission from a 2001 put in my 98. The 2001 was a 360 auto 4x4. My 98 is a 318 auto 4x4. I had no overdrive due to the electronics being from the 01. So I finally put the correct electronics into my 98, they are for that truck/trans. Now it won't shift out of 1st at all. I'm kinda irritated, but I figured I'd see if you all could tell me what I did wrong

What all did you replace in the trans? Getting any codes? Did you reset the PCM after changing the electrics?

When he said electronics, I assumed he meant the PCM.

There may be wiring color code changes between those years. Can you manually shift through the gears?

I didn't reset the pcm. Do you mean just taking the battery cables off and putting them back on? When I said electronics, I meant the stuff inside the trans. I never can remember the names of them, but I think it was OD solenoid/ governer pressure solenoid, and whatever the third one is. And no, it won't get out of first. I tried messing with the shifter. It doesn't matter whether I'm in 2nd or drive, it acts like I don't even move the shifter when I do. I have no idea what's goin on

I think the O/D, and TCC solenoids really don't matter, as they are the same throughout the years. It's the governor pressure sensor, and solenoid that matter. The sensor changed in 2000, and reflects different values for any given pressure. Also, it reads temp different as well. That one REALLY needs to be correct.

For the governor pressure solenoid, the retainer clip is different, and the wrong clip won't have the solenoid seated properly, so, you don't get the pressures you should.

Would that cause it to lock into first gear? I noticed that metal plate was different, the 98 was held in with a small clip on the backside of the sensor. I didn't think it would make a difference

Oh, it does. Wrong retainer leaves the solenoid out of position, so, it doesn't work as planned. Can give you some odd and strange behavior.

You *might* be able to determine if you have an electronic problem simply by unplugging the 8 pin connector on the drivers side of the trans. (the one for all the internal electronics) That means you won't have ANY automatic functions, nor will you have TCC, or O/D. You will HAVE to shift manually. That means starting off in first, and shifting when you think necessary. If the trans goes into the gear you tell it to, when you tell it to, that means electrics are indeed the issue. Probably want to correct the retainer issue first, and see if that doesn't just fix it. Also, in case it doesn't.... might want to install a drain plug in your trans pan.

You're tellin me! Where could I get a drain plug, just any auto parts store? I guess I will have to pull that pan back off. I wish I would have known that before I put it back together

Call your local parts stores, chances are good, at least one of them will have something on the shelf.

Let us know how things turn out.

Hey, I tore the pan off again and am replacing that retainer for the governer pressure solenoid. Do I have to put that paper gasket type thing on when I put that metal block back on the valve body?
