If they are both DHDs, it will bolt right in, only difference being the shift pattern. That changed in 98...... Also, the 99 won't have the provision for the VSS (your speedo won't work.) on the output shaft of the t-case.... you really need one from a 94-97.
What's up with the one that's in the truck?

The one I'm looking at was built in 01/99 according to the plate. Last weekend coming home to Talladega I started leaking transmission fluid. Truck still drove even though it was pouring straight out as I was putting it in so I had it towed. Then I got under it and discovered this (will attach pics) According to the mechanic (don't have a really good feeling about him) he said there's nothing wrong with the transmission that I need to replace the plate my rear yoke and my transfer case did not have even a drop of fluid in it.

Ouch.
Time for a new trans methinks. That one giving up like that is highly likely to have distributed a fair amount of crap throughout the trans..... You *might* be able to get away with just swapping it out.... but, I wouldn't hold my breath on that.
Also, keep in mind, that there is a BIG spring in there.... and it's possible for that thing to grenade in a major way when you take it apart.....
