Default Catalytic Converters

Is it hard to hollow out a Catalytic Converter? Would I be able to just take a flathead and a hammer and smack out the insides?

Need access to it first. On some trucks, the pipe takes a couple bends RIGHT after the cat, which makes it fun..... Also, gotta be careful of the front O2 sensor. Your truck REALLY wants that one, so, be sure not to destroy it when hollowing out your cat.

If you have emissions testing in your area, having a hollow cat might cause you to fail the sniffer test.......

We'll on my truck, there are 2 pipes going into my catalytic converter and there clamped on. I want to get rid of the cat but what I'm saying is when I take it off should I just hollow it out, or is that a waste of time and just put a y pipe on it and be done with it?

You will need the front O2 sensor to remain in-place. If the Y-pipe has a provision for that, you're fine - otherwise, hollow out the cat.

Ok thanks. I'm actually just going to have an exhaust shop do it.

Exhaust shop will likely have to put on a cat for ya. Unless you are real friendly with them, and pay cash......

Would a exhaust shop cut it out for me and put pipe there? My brother had it done for his truck at a different place.

Most won't since they can get fined for removing or tampering with federal emissions parts. You could go where your brother went and ask them to do yours and try though. Typically if you want your cat removed or gutted you're on your own.

A lot depends upon where you live (or who you know) - what state are you in?

Yeah I actually took out the pre-cat O2 sensor before the cat and I was about 10 minutes driving to a buddies house since he was going to fix it for me and it actually shut off on me. And then my buddy tried driving it and about 200 more feet it was bad and he said that he wasent going to drive it like that. But my dad said since I have a V8, there's still a lot of pressure trying to go through the little tiny O2 sensor hole and it wasent enough so it wasent breathing. Maybe he is right, I'm not sure. So I actually just got it towed back.
