I am curious still, though, if your t-case was swapped at some point. Put your t-case in neutral, not the trans. Of course, you'll know because it won't go anywhere. Does "N" position match up with actual neutral? In some years, the t-case shift pattern was a direct opposite of the other years.

The other thought is that your CAD (center axle disconnect) is somehow still engaged. You could pull of the vacuum lines to it, to see if you hear some vacuum release (probably not) and/or pull off the plate and physically check the position of it. The CAD is on the passenger side of the front axle, back side, four bolts.
