Default Overheated. Coolant reservoir full to the brim.

There was some noise behind the glovebox area after it overheated. I stopped, let it cool and drove rest of way to work. About to get off and need to know where to start. It is zero
Degrees today if that info is helpful. Please tell me this is just a thermostat and if so, what degree do I need to buy? 01 5.9
Thanks

The noise behind the glove box is a bit odd, because thats where the heater core is. Basically a mini radiator, but you dont have any leaks in this area?

What kind of noise was it?

Hard to describe. Maybe a half full beer can falling over in the glove box sound.
No leaks

Probably just an air pocket in the heater core, amplified by the engine getting hotter than it should.....

First thing I think I would do is test the coolant with a hydrometer, and see what its freezing point is...... (ice in the cooling system is just bad.....)

Ok new symptom. Driving home, temp gauge went up very fast. Gauge shows 230-240 and heat feels like ac. Heat worked this morning on way to work. Now it doesn't.

Sounds like you lost most of your coolant through some leak or orifice. Passenger side carpet wet? (Let's hope not...). Could be your thermostat went out, in the closed position, and your coolant flowed out of the overflow on your way to work (filling your overflow on the way).

do you mean the reservoir was fuller then it should have been? your radiator cap could bad. maybe the gurgle you heard?

that might be letting air into your heater core. not a 100% on that since I've never had one go bad in the winter.

Do you have antifreeze in it? Or enough to keep it from freezing?

You say where to start, The first thing I would do is buy a new 195º Thermostat and radiator cap (cap from the dealer, I think it's 17lb) then flush the system before swapping those two items out. I would spend a minute shooting water right through the heater core hoses also just to be sure the flow coming out of it is the same as the flow going in to it.
At 0º I would be bundled up like an Eskimo with rubber boots on and the torpedo heater blowing on me.

I think I had more water than antifreeze? Maybe a chunk of ice blocking flow? I lost all antifreeze when it over heated. Added close to 2 gallons of premix and all is well. Strange. Thanks a lot guys
