Default 95 4x4_T.C. Clutch & EGR Solenoid Tests

I'm in the process of getting all of the warning lights to go off on my 95 Ram, 4x4, 5.9L Auto. Accidently got the brake and ABS lights to shut off, now I'm moving on to the CE light.

I'm getting codes 37 and 32. After some Googling I'm coming up with a torque converter clutch solenoid circuit (37), and EGR system failure (32).

After I unhook the battery and clear the codes, the code 37 will appear almost immediately, before the truck even gets moved. That would lead me to believe the computer is detecting and open or shorted shorted - it's just not seeing what it should in that circuit since while sitting in the driveway the TC shouldn't be trying to lock up.

I have to drive it a little while to get the code 32; I think that one will be simple enough to troubleshoot.

So, does anyone know what the resistance across the TCC solenoid and EGR solenoid should be? Are these looking for 5v or 12v from the PCM? Finally, are either pulse width modulated or simply on/off?

Thanks,

Mike

TCC will be a 12 volt solenoid, that is either on, or off. Think I would check where the control wire to the PCM hits the PCM connector, and see if you have 12 volts there with the engine running. Do you actually GET TCC engagement?

Not sure if there is also a relay for the TCC in your model year.

There is a relay that sends power to the trans for both the O/D, and TCC relay. Likely there is a fuse too.....

I do have OD. I'm not exactly sure if the TC's locking up or not. I really haven't had the chance to get it on a road where I could pay attention to the tach. If it's working, it definitely locks up softer than my 94 Chevy 1500 which almost feels like another gear change.

It only drops a few hundred RPM when TCC engages. Easy to miss.

I need to run it out to the 4 lane. West Virginia 2 lanes aren't the best place to be watching the tach.

The converter is locking up fine. I don't see it with OD off, but once I hit 4th gear it locks like I'd expect. Tap the brake and it'll unlock. I see no issues with any of the transmission shifting.

I'd been looking for the TC lockup with OD off; I'm reasonably certain it's not locking up with OD off. I haven't had this truck very long and am still working out the bugs & cleaning it up. I always run my Chevy in 3rd until I get out on the highway. Out of habit I'd been driving the Ram the same way - they're geared pretty close and on the high side. The Chevy locks up in 3rd gear same as it does in 4th though. Is it normal for these trucks to not lock the converter with OD off?

I've got an idea: since the brake light circuit does effect the TC lockup, could a blown brake light fuse cause the fault code? After I cleared the codes I had the key on with the fuse still blown before I discovered I didn't have brake lights. I'm wondering if the computer saw it and threw the code before the truck ever got moved? I know the codes got cleared because the EGR code was gone until after I drove it again. Going to try to clear them again and test my theory; if I don't get it tomorrow it'll be next weekend due to some travel this week.

Thanks,

Mike

Anything is possible. Can't hurt to give it a shot.

TCC should lock with O/D turned off as well. Might be hard to notice though, unless you are paying VERY close attention...... So, a test to do on a very lonely road.

During my experimentation with a TCC idiot light (to let you know when it's locked), it actually disengages when you release the gas pedal. The switch may help, but I don't think so.
