Torque converter problems? 46re
Yes, I've started it 4-5 times now only for a couple min each time. The last time I started it the noise started right away but the engine kept running for a 60-90 sec while I went underneath to better locate the sound and look at the converter while running as I installed the new starter without the dust cover on the front of the transmission, there was no wobbling or anything that just the noise from either the converter or farther back actually in the trans , it was hard to tell exactly. I shut the truck down after that cause I didn't want to let it keep running cause it sounded so bad. Also I was able to return the starter I bought and reinstall the old 1 so at least it didn't cost anything to rule that out .
I've started it maybe 4-5 times now only for a couple min or less each time and It makes the sound right away now and I left the dust cover off last time I started it and looked under while it was running. The converter spun smooth , no wobbling. The sound was from it or possibly the transmission behind it , it was hard to tell. I shut it down after 60-90 seconds because the noise sounds really bad and I'm afraid of causing further damage. I started it again only for a couple sec just to see if it would and it did.
Kinda informal handshake deal with the guy who rebuilt it but I think he will make good on it. I can pull it and give it back to him to fix , I'm just not sure if it's the transmission or torque converter that's the problem
I got in touch with him earlier today, he says he'll tow it to his buddies shop and try to figure it out. Now it's just a matter of trust and I guess I don't have much to lose at this point. Will see how it goes
So I pulled the transmission and had a shop rebuild it again and as it turns out the first guy really screwed things up. I got it back (fixed) and installed it now the truck just cranks and cranks and won't start
