V-10 lifter noise.

LA LA LA LAAAAAA.... I'm not whisteningggggggg.......
LOLOL. I really don't wanna hear that. (or read it either, for that matter) I can find lifters from various manufacturers for a c-note, or so, but, I REALLY don't wanna have to dig that deep into the motor just yet.
Also, I have read threads where guys have taken their trucks to the dealer for this problem, the lifters got changed, and the problem was the same, or worse..... most of the threads simply don't have a solution. They just died out.

Don't stress it. I had a loud lifter at around 110k. Freaked me out. Had been using Dino oil. It would tap tap tap on startup. Switched to Valvoline maxlife 10w40 and immediately went away. I'm now at 214k and engine is still quiet. Made a believer out of me.
A little lifter noise during idle is normal too. Yours probably just needs a little cleaning. Some crud in a lifter from old oil can cause sticking. Also with mileage over 100k I would use thicker oil than 10w30.

I want to change the oil, and was trying to decide what oil to go with... I think I will actually give the max life a shot, as this engine doesn't burn thru it quite so quickly as the old truck.
I was thinking about dumping some marvel mystery oil into the crank case, to help clean things up a bit before changing it. Unless folks have a better product in mind?

I just use seafoam. Couple times I did it, the oil would come out a bit 'lumpy' and when my friend and I did the oil pump and rear main, everything looked perfect underneath. He was impressed with the condition, convinced me to keep running her. I know I didn't take off the heads or anything, but the use of oil, especially old dino oil, is pretty normal and really does make for extra maintenance. And considering price, I just grabbed a quart of Max at Oreillys: 7.29. Regular dino Valvonine was 6.29. Worth the buck.

Well, just an update here. Changed the oil to Max Life, 10w30.... and it seems to have helped a little. Very little..... I ran some marvel mystery oil in it for around 100 miles before I changed it. Doesn't seem to have helped.
Unfortunately, I am seriously considering changing the lifters....... Much as I don't really want to.

Hmm. Have you ever tried seafoam? I wouldn't quite tear it down just yet. You said you Ran the MMO for 100 miles before you changed it to max life? What I would do is change the oil again and then replace one quart of oil with 1 quart of MMO as well as putting some seafoam in the oil too. I just think you should try running it longer than 100 miles, as I've had great sucsess with both products combined. I'd run it for the life of the oil change, like 5000 miles or so.
It's not too expensive, I'd just try it as you would have nothing to lose.
