Default 2001 2500 V10 advice

Hey everyone. As the title says I'm looking at purchasing a 2500 for my daily driver. I got a new job recently where I only have to drive 10km to the bus and back. I bought a 2015 1500 brand new for my old job(travelled a lot) but payments suck and I would like to put the money elsewhere.

So I'm currently looking at a 2001 2500 V10, Reg Cab 4x4 with the 47RE and roughly 187000km(117000miles). the truck looks to be in decent shape other then rusted out front wheel wells but that will be fixed in time. The asking price is only $1000. I just want some input on having a v10 auto as a daily or should I continue to look for a 2500 360? I run into work around the house where I need a 2500 quite often but have no use for a diesel. My biggest concern is the V10 discontinued parts and the auto tranny. Any advice or light to shed on the matter? thanks.

The 47RE seems to be pretty dependable, I don't see issues with those NEARLY so often as I do with the 46 series trans.

That mileage, and that price? BUY IT! That is a farking steal.

I like the power, and smoothness of the V-10 over my old 360 any day.

There are still aftermarket sensors and such available..... how well they work is rather a crap shoot.....

Yes I'm aware of some sensors being discontinued, but they are still available and I may just buy 2 for future use if that's the case. I'm going to look at the truck today and take it for a test drive. If I sell my 2015 and fix up the v10 it will be my daily driver, main concern is the tranny, ive been looking for a 360 with a NV3500 but if the 47RE's are as stout as people claim then I'm willing to look past the "fun" of a manual. I'm not concerned about gas mileage, my 2015 1500 gets an average of 15mpg with my short commutes and comes with a monthly payment ontop and warranty just ran out, not to mention even a light load of around 2000lbs she sucks the fuel and downshifts on every hill(10-12mpg with any load). Bodywork I can do myelf and same with mechanical. I should be able to buy it for $800 and have it on the road and bodywork done with a total cost of ~$5000. That includes new tires and brakes. Thanks for the input hopefully shes as good as I think it is when I take it out!

HeyYou, do you by chance happen to know any differences the 2001 would have in comparison to older models? I'm curious if they adopted disc brakes? Computer changes etc. Thanks again for the help!

I don't think they got rear disc until 2002. (last year of that bodystyle for the 3/4 and 1 ton fellers.)

I don't think the 8.0 suffered from the death flash either.... so, about the only differences will be pretty minor. (trans temp/pressure sensor, for one.) Everything else should be pretty much the same as the 98 and up trucks.

Usually related to clogged cats and the excessive cylinder temps over time from the cats if they weren't dealt with. I bought mine with clogged cats and shall we say for $75 they were fixed

In all seriousness anyone who I have talked to hasn't had any issues except the cats and the fuel economy. Also the steering goes out premature if you don't grease it. My uncle had his trans in his v10 rebuilt at 120k because reverse engaged slow but he did a lot of towing through the mountains. He bought it in 97 a few months old and 3k miles and sold it with 180k in 2004. He ran into the guy he sold it too in 2010 and it had 260k on it still going strong. When I had lunch with him last week he said", you won't believe this s***, I saw my old v10 driving around town 3 days ago..........."

That is a steal, I paid $9500 for mine with 75,000miles (and 7" with 38s) just this summer. Plus I have to redo the steering and shocks, just gotta love lifted trucks lol
