Default 98 ram 5.2 coughing

98 ram1500. 5.2.
I bought it probably 8 months ago, it’s been having a hard time idling, I can hear it sucking in air and starting to idle really rough and then it will just tack back up and repeat. It will also while driving in the 1k-1500rpm range, it will start coughing. I let off the gas and get back on it and it’s good to go. Has anyone ever experienced this? I’ve done plugs, wires and dist. Cap. Nobody in my area can figure it out! Had Honda do a fuel system flush but who knows how well those idiots there did.

Thank you!!

The fuel system flush was a waste of money.

How is the plenum? (see stickied thread at top of this forum)

Does it run good for a couple minutes, then start running crappy, or does it run crappy right away?

I will check out the plenum thread. Generally it runs rough of within 2 minutes of being started. Usually if I floor it, it will stay out of its coughing phase until next time I run it after it’s been sitting a while. I’d say if I use it 10 times, it will do it twice.

Fuel system flush may have been useless, however the truck would literally die while driving if I let off gas and I haven’t had any issues like that since the flush. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for taking the time to help out

How old are your O2 sensors? If they are still original, unplug the front sensor, and see if the problem goes away.

Looks clean?

No clue how old they are, but I was going to ask if I should do that. I will try it tomorrow. Tomorrow I get to do my goddamnmother************************** tranny lines for the second time due to a parts mix up the first time! They both had check valves because one was mislabeled, so they were both the same line. Took 8 hours to install. No wonder one line didn’t fit...
anyways, I’ve had enough of this truck. I love it but it’s getting to the point where I’m about to get rid of it. It’s pretty clean. but let’s see what you guys can help me out!

as far as plenum goes, I read and watched videos. And what it concludes to me atleast, let me know if I’m misunderstanding.
Its a gasket that seem to wear out and let go, and when they do it causes all kinds of issues. Telltale sign is oil on bottom when you open up throttle body. This one looks clean to me. See attached pictures.

Yeah, that looks pretty clean. The residue you see down there is likely from the PCV system.

if you've done a tuneup already, and your fuel pressure is ok, if it is dying when you let off the gas, that's most likely the IAC it sounds like to me, you can possibly clean it out

no check engine light codes? A new o2 sensor certainly couldn't hurt, I may get a new one myself at some point soon

it can be a finicky thing messing with sensors or guessing when there's no error codes, I've heard many over the years from reading claim the throttle position sensor could possibly do this, but I've never had a TPS go out on me
