Default 2001 3500 have daytime running lights but no headlights

I have a gen 2 3500 4x4 that the daytime running lights work but no headlights. I changed the light switch and checked all the fuses but I can't get headlights, If I flash the high beams I do have the high beams but they go off when released. This truck has the DRL box on the inner fender and if I pull that plug I don't have any lights. What am I missing?

2 or 4 headlight system?

If you can read wiring diagrams, grab a service manual for your truck from here. Diagrams are in section 8W.

I have the two headlight set up and I can read diagrams but I'm not sure what I should be looking for. What is keeping the headlights from coming on?

I don't recall if the headlight switch provides power, or ground on that year..... (dodge didn't seem to be able to make up its mind on that one....) So, if it provides power, need to see where you lose it, if it provides ground, need to follow the power anyway, and see where it doesn't make it. The problem will be between where you have it, and where you don't.

I think I read this year the switch provides ground. I'm going to check the combo switch tomorrow and see if I have a broken wire in the steering column.

Unhappy hey no headlights guy

did you ever get this problem figured out as I have the same issue on my 98 Dodge 24 valve Ram Diesel 2500 Quad cab Laramie and ive change out the dash head light switch and the steering column multi switch and couldnt see any broken wires at the connectors and pins. I'm not a very savy wiring guy but would still like an explanation as to what the hell is going on here and is this a common issue as Ive had this truck from new?

I know it isn't the light switch as I replaced that. From what I've read the truck is wired switch to ground. I have to go buy a T 25 torx driver to get the steering column cover off to look at the combo switch which seems to also be a problem area. I will be looking for a broken wire as I have read that is often a problem. I will report on my findings.

I replaced the dimmer/combo switch and now I have headlights. Since the inside had melted I'm guessing if I put relays on the lights I can stop this from happening again.I hope this helps someone. Thanks to all who replied on this.
