Best LSD for a 1996
The only thing I would to "you" is to ask...how much you wanna spend? I've got a '96 1500 1 wheel drive n I put a rebuilt trac lock LSD n her place. Bang for the buck (cheapest) minus heavy duty off road use or dragging aircraft carriers around is usually a rebuilt trac lock LSD. I found mine on ebay for $225 with shipping, with fluid, new seals, carrier bearings and a homemade differential adjuster tool...add another $65/75. That is of course, if you're doing it yourself. If you get a shop to do it, the differential becomes secondary to the quality and knowledge of the installer.
If you have a Dana 44 or Dana 60 differential, I'm partial to the Power lok unit. It has replaceable clutches in it and works well. You must run a readily available lube additive (available from Ford, CRC, etc.) to keep the clutches from chattering.
guy has one locally for a few hundred... with 4.10 gears and fresh clutches (I think...). I'd go with a dana 60 even if you have a 9.25 now.
Not long ago I bought a burned up truck to take the axles and transfer case out of for my van. I gave 600... it had dana 60 front and rear with 4.10 gears and lsd in the rear. Sold some of the other parts for a few hundred and wound up with both axles and transfer case for a days work and about $400 cash. you just have to watch craigslist, etc... and see what comes up.

I've got a simple rebuilt Trac Lock n it improved 'ol blue's handling exponentially over what it was. It's a daily driver n her days of heavy haulin' are over...however...if you're throwin' real money into your pickup, don't go cheap. Spend the money on the differential as well. Think of the pickup as a single unit. The engine turns up lotsa horsepower n torque, so the tranny must be able to handle the extra ponies...engine mounts, transmission mounts, oil coolers performance computer. Even something a ubiquitous as the steering pump, water pump, alternator and idler pulleys are now in play. The driveshaft, u-joints, the gear ratio n the differential, the brakes, the suspension, tires, etc...everything must be considered to build a proper power wagon (no punn intended). I built a gas guzzling screaming Charger round 40 years back n I never "stopped building" for the perfect hot rod. That is, until I foinly ran outta money, lol.

Pick up a Power lok unit to fit your differential. Once you do that, you will need to have new carrier bearings and shims, which can usually be picked up with a ring gear setup kit. . Once you have those items, take them to someone that can setup rear differentials, as the proper shims will need to be placed on the new carrier (behind the bearings), to properly setup the gears.
