Ticking/tapping noise 5.9 magnum
I have a 2001 ram with a 5.9 magnum motor, and just a couple moths ago I had taken one of the heads off to remove a broken spark plug, and ever since then, it has run great. However now, I have only put 3,000 mile on since I put the head back on and it ran great until now. Now, whenever I have the engine between 1500 and 2000 rpm, there is a persistant ticking/tapping noise but it is not completely constant and repetitive, so I think that it might be a timing chain issue. But it is important to note that the engine really only makes this noise while warm.
I would just like a few opinions on what it might be and how to fix it.

Go to your local auto parts store. They should have a stethoscope with a rod on the end. Get the motor warm then have some one hold the gas to that rpm range and make sure it's making the noise. Then probe around the engine till you narrow down where the noise is coming from.
Are you sure it isn't an exhaust leak at one of the manifolds or a leak at one of the exhaust pipes that connect to the manifold?
Also, do you happen to have an audio recording of the sound that you can post here for others to hear it and provide thoughts on the actual sound that you're hearing?

i have also had people tell me that it might be the timing chain slapping around
Can you possibly post an audio recording of the sound here so that folks here can listen to possibly determine what might be making the sound?

Do I pretty much know im not gonna get an update on your issue? Yes. But I'm still gonna try lol. Ever find out what it was? I am having a similar issue.
Did you manage to solve it? Similar issue on my 95 Dakota with a 5.9 swap. I've changed plenum gasket, spark plugs, wires, crankshaft position sensor. The sound comes out if the exhaust and its especially loud since my exhaust is currently off. Only running a downpipe ATM because of exhaust repairs.
